In the Community

At Sunrise Soya Foods, we're committed to supporting organizations that make our communities such great places to live, work & play. Sunrise is a proud sponsor of the following organizations:

Canadian Diabetes Association

Canadian Diabetes Association - Cooking for your Life and Food Skills for Families

Over 2 million Canadians live with diabetes. At Sunrise, we believe in a cure and that through eating, we can heal. We are proud to be involved with the Canadian Diabetes Association (CDA) and its Cooking for Your Life and Food Skills for Families programs in promoting the importance of healthy eating and a healthy lifestyle. Cooking for Your Life and Food Skills for Families are hands-on cooking and nutrition programs designed for anyone who wants to learn how to cook healthy meals, from diabetes sufferers, to those with high cholesterol, to those who simply want to be healthier. Classes encourage participants to buy local fresh products, to choose more nutritious foods that meet the Canada Food Guide Requirements, such as tofu, and to modify their recipes, without compromising taste, to make lower-fat alternatives. The CDA is the third-largest health charity in Canada, and has been working on behalf of diabetes sufferers across the country for over 50 years. Supporting more than 10,000 health care professionals, the CDA sponsors research, education, prevention and advocacy, helping diabetes sufferers manage their symptoms, with the ultimate aim of preventing the onset of the disease in the first place.

In addition to being a title sponsor of the Cooking for Your Life and Food Skills for Families programs, Sunrise raises over $10,000 each year for the CDA through charitable endeavours, such as sales of the Vancouver Chefs Take on Tofu Cookbook and by hosting an annual charity golf tournament.

S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Foundation

S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Foundation

Given the history of Sunrise Soya Foods, immigration support is dear to our hearts. In order to give back to the Chinese community that supported the Joe family through the early years, and pay homage to the Joe family heritage, Sunrise is proud to support the efforts of the S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Foundation, delivering a wide range of support services, including immigrant settlement and integration services, employment training, family and youth counseling, seniors and women programs, and health care services. S.U.C.C.E.S.S. provides services in 23 locations in Metro Vancouver and one in Fort St. John, in addition to its 2 overseas offices in Taipei and Seoul.

Project CHEF

Project CHEF

Project CHEF stands for Cook Healthy Edible Food, which is exactly what elementary school children across Vancouver are given the chance to do with this highly successful and in-demand educational program. Thanks to the efforts of Chef Barb, children in Grade 4 and 5 are taught the in and outs of cooking; learning about food groups, healthy ingredients, how food is grown, safety in the kitchen, how to work in a team, table manners and much more. This program is invaluable in teaching children the importance of cooking wholesome and nutritious meals, promoting life-long healthy eating. Sunrise is pleased to provide our locally produced tofu to the program to help encourage students in environmentally sensitive food practices, and discover the joy of fresh, unprocessed food.

Powell Street Festival

Powell Street Festival

The Powell Street Festival, the longest running community arts festival in the Lower Mainland, is an annual celebration of Japanese arts, culture, and heritage. Sunrise is proud to sponsor the festival and its support of traditional and contemporary artists in the Japanese Canadian and Asian Canadian communities. Held outdoors in the Strathcona neighbourhood of Vancouver, you will find us at the festival every summer, serving up tofu treats.

Quest Food Exchange

Sunrise, in its pursuit of environmentally sensitive practices, is proud to work with Quest Food Exchange, donating tofu products to help the less fortunate in Vancouver. This means that no more tofu ends up in the landfill, ending up instead on the plates of the hungry and needy. Much deserved praise goes out to Quest and its team for their continued efforts to save food and get it to the people that need it most!

And much more ...

In addition to the above support, Sunrise Soya Foods donates over 37,000 lbs of tofu, as well as providing financial support, to community, school and charity events throughout the year. Check out our events page for the latest Sunrise presence in your neighbourhood.

Commitment to the community is our way of saying thank you for the support it has given us over the last 50 plus years and is another way of putting Goodness First.
