Sanitation Manager

POSITION SUMMARY
The Sanitation Manager is responsible for ensuring that plant sanitation levels meet all regulatory and in-house standards by providing strong leadership and operating expertise to the hourly employees. The incumbent is accountable for all activities during the night shift as well as ensuring sanitation tasks are completed before the start of the next production shift.
JOB DUTIES
Leadership
- Ensure personal and team compliance with all company policies, procedures and standards for people safety, food safety, quality, cost control, waste reduction and complete and on-time delivery
- Understand, promote, follow and ensure team compliance for all company and regulatory standards including, but not limited to, Provincial Employment Standards and Human Rights Code, Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHS), Food Safety (GMP/SQF), Safe Operating Procedures (SOP’s), Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) and Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS)
- Ensure that all staff under your direction are equipped with and are using the proper personal protective equipment as required
- Report all safety concerns, hazards, near misses and injuries (regardless of how minor) to your Manager and/or JHSC Member or First Aid Attendant as applicable immediately
- Provide leadership for employee relations through effective and consistent communications, coaching, training, and development and evaluation of employee performance for your team
- Establish training needs of team and implement employee training to ensure they have the required competencies to carry out their job responsibilities
- Ensure the effectiveness of team members through strategic hiring and effective assignment of duties, setting of priorities, delegation of work, discipline, and dismissal
- Develop strategic performance goals, metrics, and targets for your team that are consistent with company goals.
Operations
- Direct, train, and supervise sanitation staff, ensuring all procedures and regulations are followed.
- Develop, implement, and manage sanitation programs and procedures.
- Lead capital projects related to sanitation and cleaning processes.
- Define, track, and communicate sanitation KPIs for continuous improvement.
- Conduct inspections, audits, and validations to ensure sanitation effectiveness.
- Manage and verify sanitation scheduling, SSOPs, and documentation for compliance.
- Schedules sanitation staff based on production requirement.
- Assigns daily & weekly tasks to sanitation team based on Master Sanitation Schedule.
- In conjunction with the maintenance department, oversees the dismantling and reassembling of equipment and conveyors for cleaning / sanitation.
- Maintain records of sanitation activities, inspections, and corrective actions
- Performs chemical titration to ensure all chemicals used for CIP/COP are within specs.
- Accountable for the material costs and inventory for the sanitation department (such as cleaning supplies and chemicals)
- Troubleshoots problems on CIP system, reporting issues to maintenance & QA.
- Performs daily Pre-Op inspections with QA to ensure Plant Quality Program requirements are met.
- Attends daily shift-change meetings with production supervisors.
- Conducts weekly staff meeting to address and discuss any food safety & sanitation related issues and concerns.
- Enforces safe work procedures to meet OHS requirements; reports any workplace incidents and facilitates early return-to-work processes.
- Conducts probationary and annual performance reviews with subordinates, approves vacation requests and timecards.
REQUIREMENTS
- Minimum 5 years of Sanitation leadership experience in a Food manufacturing facility.
- Proven ability in developing, implementing and improving a Plant Sanitation System.
- Must have previous experience in building and leading a high-performance sanitation team.
- Knowledge in HACCP, Microbiology, Sanitation, Chemical Safety, Pest Control, and Quality Systems.
- Mechanically inclined, have working knowledge of production equipment and systems including maintenance activities.
- Experience in managing relations with Government agencies (CFIA, Worksafe BC, Health Canada etc), external auditors and internal customers.
- A track record of success in leading continuous improvement initiatives cross functionally and delivering business results.
- Ability / Willingness to obtain Intermediate First Aid
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills built on a team-focused approach
- Good verbal and written English language skills
- Computer skills: Proficient in Microsoft Office applications
- Ability to delegate, set expectations, and monitor progress of all direct reports
- Strong organizational and time management skills; ability to multi-task and balance conflicting priorities
- Ability to identify issues and implement creative and strategic solutions to overcome problems
- Ability to work effectively both independently and in a team environment
- Detail oriented and ability to work well under pressure and with minimal supervision.

WORK CONDITIONS
- Permanent Full-time position (40 hours per week)
- Work is performed (70% in the production floor and 30% in an office setting)
- Exposure to noise and a wet temperature varied environment when in the production area
- Interaction with employees, management, and the public at large
- Available to work any day/ any shift of the week to meet production requirements
- Flexible hours including nights, weekends, and holidays as required to meet business needs
- After hours availability on emergency calls
- Wearing of company provided Uniform and other Personal Protective Equipment is required as applicable
